A Control Scheme Nobody Asked to Debate
Donkey Kong Bananza arrived on Nintendo Switch 2 with the kind of fanfare that comes with a decades-old franchise finally getting a proper mainline entry. The punching, the destruction physics, the sheer chaos of tearing apart environments – all of it landed well. But tucked inside the control settings is something far quieter and far more divisive: gyroscope aiming, baked into sections of the game that ask players to tilt their hardware to aim, line up shots, or navigate specific mechanics. For a family-friendly platformer, it’s an odd inclusion. For handheld players specifically, it’s starting to cause real friction.
The complaints aren’t overwhelming forum threads or mass refund requests. They’re more persistent than that – a steady undercurrent of players who find that playing Bananza in handheld mode introduces a layer of physical awkwardness the game doesn’t fully account for. And unlike traditional button-mapping complaints, gyro issues are harder to ignore when the feature is tied to core gameplay moments rather than optional flair.

What the Gyro Controls Actually Do
In Bananza, gyro controls appear most prominently in sections where players need to direct certain projectiles, orient platforms, or guide objects through environmental puzzles. The Switch 2’s hardware supports gyro input natively, and Nintendo has been building gyro functionality into more titles since the original Switch’s Joy-Con era. For Bananza, the implementation feels intentional rather than tacked on – the design clearly assumes players will sometimes tilt the controller to interact with the world, the way motion aiming works in Splatoon or The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
The problem is that those games were built around motion controls as a foundational pillar. Bananza is primarily a 3D platformer where gyro appears selectively, which means players frequently switch mental gears between standard stick-based movement and gyro-dependent moments. That context switching is jarring in docked mode. In handheld mode, where the entire screen moves with the player’s hands, it becomes actively disorienting.
There is a settings toggle to reduce gyro sensitivity, and some players have found a middle ground there. But sensitivity adjustment doesn’t address the core complaint: that tilting a handheld screen to aim while also maintaining spatial awareness of a 3D environment asks more of the player’s physical coordination than the game’s otherwise accessible design implies. Bananza is marketed as a game for broad audiences. The gyro sections don’t always feel like they got that same memo.

Handheld Mode Gets the Worst of It
Playing Switch 2 docked or with detached Joy-Cons gives gyro controls a fighting chance. The screen stays fixed, and the controller movement becomes a separate, manageable input. In handheld mode, the entire device is the controller, so tilting to activate gyro literally tilts the screen away from the player’s natural viewing angle. It’s a small physical conflict, but in a game that demands quick reactions across platforming sequences, it compounds.
This isn’t unique to Bananza – handheld gyro has always been the weaker version of the feature across Switch titles. What makes Bananza’s situation worth paying attention to is that the game’s broader design is so clean and accessible that the gyro sections stand out as outliers. Players who sail through the destruction mechanics and responsive ground-pound controls suddenly hit a gyro-gated moment and the flow breaks. That tonal inconsistency is what’s generating the most frustration, not gyro itself.
The Opt-Out Problem
Nintendo has historically handled gyro as an opt-in feature with accessible alternatives. Splatoon 3 lets players disable gyro entirely and rely on sticks. Tears of the Kingdom gives players the choice, even if gyro aiming is noticeably more precise. Bananza’s approach is less generous in certain sections – some gyro interactions are tied directly to progression, not just optional minigames or collectible detours. When a feature tied to completing a segment has no stick-based alternative, players who genuinely struggle with gyro in handheld mode don’t have a clean out.
That’s a design decision that reads differently depending on who’s holding the console. A player on their couch with Joy-Cons detached barely registers the inconvenience. A player on a commuter train, phone-style with the Switch 2 in their hands, is working against both the gyro mechanic and their own physical context. Nintendo’s hardware has always tried to be flexible, but Bananza’s gyro integration assumes a level of physical stability that handheld mode doesn’t guarantee.
There’s also a subtle accessibility angle that hasn’t gotten much attention. Gyro controls, particularly in handheld orientation, are harder to manage for players with tremor conditions, limited wrist mobility, or situations where holding a device completely still isn’t physically possible. If portions of Bananza require gyro without a stick-based fallback, those players aren’t dealing with an inconvenience – they’re dealing with a locked door. Nintendo’s accessibility track record on Switch has been genuinely strong in most respects, which makes the gap here feel more noticeable.

The loudest version of this debate will probably settle once a patch clarifies whether Nintendo intends to add alternative inputs for gyro-required moments, or whether the current design is final. A growing segment of the Bananza community is already calling for it directly, not through vague feedback channels but in specific forum posts tagging Nintendo support accounts and asking for a stick-based alternative toggle. Whether that constitutes enough pressure to move a first-party Nintendo team mid-release cycle is a different question entirely – and Nintendo’s history of post-launch control updates is inconsistent enough that players shouldn’t count on a fix arriving quickly, if at all.
