Donkey Kong Bananza arrives as one of Nintendo’s most ambitious Switch 2 launches, packed with destructible environments, vibrant color palettes, and layered visual design. But for players with color vision deficiencies, that visual richness comes with a serious catch – the game’s accessibility options don’t go nearly far enough.

What the Game Offers – and Where It Stops
Donkey Kong Bananza includes a colorblind mode in its accessibility settings, which on the surface sounds like a meaningful step. The option exists, it’s labeled clearly, and Nintendo deserves credit for including it at all. But inclusion and effectiveness are two different things, and players in the colorblind community are quickly discovering that the gap between those two things is wide.
The mode adjusts certain on-screen elements to account for color vision differences, but it doesn’t apply uniformly across the full game. Environmental cues, enemy indicators, and collectible highlights – elements that carry real gameplay weight – retain color coding that was clearly designed with full color vision in mind. Switching the colorblind mode on doesn’t make those elements readable; it just makes the menus look slightly different.
The game doesn’t distinguish between types of color vision deficiency, either. Deuteranopia, protanopia, and tritanopia affect players in meaningfully different ways, and a single blanket “colorblind mode” toggle doesn’t account for any of that nuance. Most modern accessibility-focused games offer separate filter options for each deficiency type. Bananza offers one setting and calls it done.
What makes this especially frustrating is the nature of the game itself. Bananza is built around rapid environmental interaction – smashing, digging, and reacting to what’s around you in real time. When color is one of the primary ways the game communicates what’s interactive, destructible, or dangerous, a colorblind mode that only partially addresses those signals isn’t an accessibility feature. It’s a checkbox.

The Accessibility Gap Nintendo Keeps Stumbling Into
Nintendo’s relationship with accessibility has always been uneven. The company built the Switch’s Joy-Con with physical flexibility in mind, and features like button remapping arrived on the platform eventually – but usually later than players needed them, and rarely with the depth that dedicated accessibility advocates ask for. Colorblind support follows the same pattern: present, but underdeveloped.
Compare Bananza’s approach to what some other major releases have done. Games like The Last of Us Part I and Forza Horizon 5 set a high bar with granular colorblind settings, adjustable contrast modes, and the ability to fine-tune visual filters independently. Those games treated accessibility as a design pillar rather than a post-launch addition. Bananza, by contrast, feels like colorblind support was added during a final QA pass rather than integrated from the ground up.
The core issue is that color-dependent design decisions were baked into Bananza’s world building before accessibility considerations caught up. The game’s ore veins, terrain types, and interactable surfaces are distinguished primarily through color. That’s a fundamental design choice, not a surface-level UI problem. Layering a filter on top of it after the fact only does so much when the underlying visual language was never built to work without color.
Players on Reddit and accessibility-focused gaming forums have started documenting specific scenarios where the colorblind mode fails – moments where ore types are indistinguishable, where enemy warning signals blend into the background, and where certain puzzle elements become genuinely unsolvable without trial and error. These aren’t fringe edge cases. They show up regularly across the game’s main content.
Nintendo has patched accessibility gaps in its games before. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Splatoon 3 both received updates that improved colorblind functionality after community feedback. That history suggests Bananza could see improvements, but it also raises the question of why the lesson keeps needing to be learned the same way – through player complaints rather than proactive design.
What a Fix Actually Looks Like
A real solution here isn’t complicated in theory. Adding separate filter presets for the three main types of color vision deficiency, allowing players to adjust filter intensity independently, and – critically – ensuring those filters apply to gameplay elements rather than just menus would address most of what the community is asking for. Some developers have also introduced an option to add secondary visual indicators to color-coded objects, like pattern overlays or icon tags, so color isn’t the only signal. That approach works regardless of what the player sees.

The players most affected by Bananza’s colorblind gaps aren’t asking for a redesigned game. They’re asking for the mode that’s already there to actually work – to cover the parts of the experience where color does the heaviest lifting. Right now, the setting exists more as an acknowledgment that colorblind players exist than as a genuine accommodation for them. For a game this visually ambitious, that’s a hard pill to swallow when the difference between playable and frustrating comes down to whether a vein of ore reads as orange or gray.
