When the Camera Decides How You Play
Donkey Kong Bananza arrives as one of Nintendo’s biggest Switch 2 launches, packed with destructible environments, layered underground worlds, and the kind of kinetic energy that makes you want to pick it up and never put it down. But for players logging their hours in handheld mode – on the go, on the couch, or flat on their back at midnight – something keeps pulling at the experience. The camera doesn’t move the way you want it to, and no amount of stick adjustment seems to fully fix that.
This isn’t a dealbreaker issue, and it hasn’t stopped the game from earning strong praise across the board. But spend enough consecutive hours playing Bananza in handheld, and the camera’s fixed behaviors start to feel less like a design quirk and more like a structural friction point – one that sits just below the surface of an otherwise energetic game.

What the Camera Actually Does (and Doesn’t Do)
Bananza’s camera operates on a pull-back logic that works beautifully on a large screen. When DK charges through a wall or drops into a lower layer of terrain, the camera repositions itself to frame the action cinematically. On a TV, that repositioning reads as dynamic and intentional. On a 7.9-inch handheld display, it reads differently – the sudden angle shifts and the camera’s reluctance to fully follow tight vertical movement compress the visual field in ways that can briefly disorient rather than excite.
The game’s underground level design compounds this. Bananza’s signature mechanic is drilling and smashing downward through stacked geological layers, which means the camera is constantly being asked to track vertical depth. When you’re playing docked, your eyes have room to absorb that depth. Handheld, the layers stack closer together on screen, and the camera’s default distance – clearly tuned for the living room – doesn’t automatically compensate.
There are manual camera controls, and experienced players will use them constantly. But the fact that they’re necessary so frequently during normal traversal is itself telling. A camera that requires active player management during routine gameplay moments is asking for cognitive bandwidth that handheld sessions, by their nature, tend not to have in surplus. Handheld play skews casual, interruptible, and lower-focus – exactly the context where automatic camera behavior needs to be doing more of the work.

Why Handheld Context Changes Everything
Playing a game docked versus handheld isn’t just a screen size difference. It’s a posture difference, an attention difference, and a session-length difference. Docked play tends to invite longer, more focused engagement – you’re at your TV, probably sitting upright, probably not doing three other things. Handheld play is more fragmented. You’re commuting, waiting, or half-watching something else. The tolerance for camera friction drops significantly because there’s already more competing for your attention.
Nintendo knows this better than almost anyone. Their first-party titles have historically been tuned to feel equally good across both modes, which is part of what makes Bananza’s camera situation stand out. It’s not that the camera is broken – it’s that it was clearly optimized for one context and expected to translate cleanly into another. That translation isn’t quite landing.
The Strain Shows Up in Specific Scenarios
The moments where the camera strain becomes most noticeable aren’t the big set-piece sequences – those are paced to give you time to reorient. The friction shows up in the middle-tier gameplay: punching through rock clusters to find hidden items, navigating tight lateral corridors at lower terrain layers, or repositioning during multi-phase enemy encounters where DK’s movement is rapid and the terrain is actively changing around him. In those moments, the camera lags just slightly behind the action, or snaps to an angle that cuts off the area you were trying to assess.
On a TV, that snap is readable because you have peripheral visual context. On a handheld screen, the snap can mean losing track of where DK is for a half-second, which during a combat encounter translates directly to a hit taken or a platform missed. It’s a small thing repeated across hours of play – and small things repeated across hours of play accumulate into fatigue in a way that isolated incidents never would.
There’s also the question of gyroscope interaction. Bananza uses the Switch 2’s motion controls in select moments, and while those sequences are optional for most players, they add another layer of physical adjustment to handheld sessions. When you’re already compensating mentally for camera behavior that doesn’t quite track the way you expect, adding motion-based control requirements in the same session increases the overall friction load noticeably. The two issues aren’t directly related, but they’re experienced together, and they compound.
This is worth flagging separately from the larger conversation around Bananza’s docked mode praise shadowing Switch 2 Lite hopes – because while that discussion centers on hardware decisions, this one is squarely about software. A camera patch, or even an accessibility option that adjusts the default camera distance specifically for handheld mode, would cost Nintendo relatively little and likely improve the experience for a significant portion of the player base.

What makes this worth raising is precisely that Bananza is a good game. The core mechanics are sharp, the world design is creative, and the energy of the thing carries you through most sessions on enthusiasm alone. But a recurring camera issue in handheld mode isn’t a nitpick – it’s a friction point that sits directly in the path of how a lot of people will actually play this game. The Switch 2 is a hybrid console, and Nintendo’s own first-party titles are the most visible argument for why that hybrid design matters. When handheld feels like a secondary consideration in one of their biggest launches, that argument weakens slightly – and players who do most of their gaming away from the TV will feel that gap every session.
