Donkey Kong Bananza has generated genuine excitement since its reveal – a full-scale 3D platformer for Nintendo Switch 2, built around destruction mechanics and a new chapter for one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises. But as players get hands-on time with the game, a specific frustration is surfacing in corners of the Nintendo community that tend to care deeply about hardware fidelity: the game’s HD rumble implementation, or more accurately, the gaps in it, are starting to draw real attention.
The Switch 2’s HD rumble system – an evolution of the original Joy-Con haptic feedback technology – was marketed as one of the hardware’s defining sensory upgrades.
Donkey Kong Bananza, as a flagship launch-window title, was the kind of game fans expected to push those haptic capabilities hard. It stars a character who punches through terrain, tears apart environments with brute force, and interacts with the world in ways that practically beg for tactile reinforcement. The disconnect between what players expected to feel and what they’re actually feeling has become a quiet but persistent talking point.

What Players Are Actually Noticing
The criticism isn’t that Bananza has no rumble at all. Basic vibration is present – hits register, collectibles ping, certain environmental interactions produce feedback. The issue is that the haptic responses feel generic rather than expressive. When Nintendo’s internal teams – or closely supervised second-party efforts – produce a game that doesn’t fully explore the hardware’s haptic range, it sends a quieter signal about how much the company actually prioritizes that feature going forward. Haptic enthusiasts aren’t a loud majority, but they’re an engaged and vocal subset of the Nintendo audience, and they pay attention to exactly this kind of thing.
It’s also worth considering what Bananza’s physical premise demands. The entire game is built around the sensation of force – DK isn’t just running and jumping, he’s dismantling the world around him. That’s a design language that translates directly into haptic opportunity. A punch that shreds through sandstone should feel different from one that cracks ice. A roll through open space versus a tunnel collapse should communicate differently through the controller. The fact that these distinctions aren’t consistently present isn’t a technical limitation of the hardware – it’s a production choice that some players are finding harder to ignore the more they play.

None of this derails the game’s broader reception, and most players will finish Bananza without thinking about haptics once. But for the subset of Switch 2 owners who bought into the hardware specifically because of what its improved rumble system promised – the kind of tactile immersion that makes a controller feel like an extension of the screen – Bananza sits as a reminder that even Nintendo’s biggest titles can leave that promise only partially kept.
